Horizon Line
We sat in the kayak and looked out over the great stretch of marsh and sky. It was so quiet that we could hear the popping of the marsh- the snails rustling leaves, the crabs clacking along shells.
“I have this theory about horizons.” My dad broke the soft silence. “They make our bodies feel safe because we can tell no predators are coming for us. We can see any potential threats. So our bodies and minds can relax.”
I watched his dark head against the purple sky, his canvas coat worn and his hands bunched in his pockets to hide his fingers from the cold. I scanned my body, my shoulders dropped an my jaw unclenched, I was safe.
- For my dad, who taught me to sit with the horizon.
Each painting is based on a memory associated with the horizon line. These memories were collected from friends, strangers, and family. To make each painting, the artist would play or read the memory and translate that feeling into a painting. The final product is a set of 20 paintings and stories that capture a memory of the horizon.
Each painting is available for purchase via Visionary Projects Gallery and will be shipped out when the show closes on May 1.
